Navigating the Fashion Brand Landscape: A Beginner's Guide

, by MaisonGrozavu , 2 min reading time

The beginner's guide to fashion brands provides essential insights into navigating the fashion landscape, helping you enhance your style with informed choices.

Working out which fashion brands are worth buying from is mostly a matter of knowing what to look at. Price does not tell you much. Specification does. This guide covers what to check, and which pieces are worth owning first.

How to Read a Fashion Brand

Four things tell you almost everything. Fabric weight in g/m². Fibre composition. Named certifications. And whether the brand states how its sizing runs.

A brand publishing all four has made choices it can defend. One describing its cotton as "premium" has not. The reasoning behind the first number is in Fabric Weight Explained.

The Pieces Worth Owning First

Build from the anchor outward. Four pieces cover most of a year:

  • Oversized Heavyweight Tee — 237 g/m² combed ring-spun cotton, drop shoulders, reinforced ribbed collar. The anchor.
  • Mid-Weight Crewneck — 280 g/m² organic cotton, GOTS, OCS and GRS certified. Light enough alone in spring, warm enough layered in autumn.
  • Wide-Leg Pants — 300 g/m² cotton with 5% elastane. Heavy enough to fall in a clean line, stretchy enough to sit in.
  • Mill-Dyed Oversized Hoodie — 340 g/m² brushed fleece, dyed at the fabric stage so the colour holds.

For a simpler starting point, the Wide Collar Tee at 200 g/m² in GOTS-certified organic cotton does the same job at a lighter weight.

Less than the industry suggests. Colours rotate; construction does not. The durable shift over recent years has been upward in gram weight — premium tees moved from around 180 to 220 or 240, hoodies from 280 past 340.

How the weights fit together across a year is set out in Layering by Grammage.
